History and Hauntings:
Built in 1904 by James Franklin Morehead, this three-story landmark opened as “the only strictly first-class house in Chico, and the superior of any North of Sacramento,” offering 56 rooms, a 200-seat dining room, and cutting-edge amenities including electric and gas lighting, steam heat, and private baths.
A handsome 1904 Studebaker wagonette transported guests between the hotel and the Fifth Street train depot, while velvet carpets and lincrusta wainscoting adorned the interiors.
After only a few years as a luxury hotel, the building changed uses repeatedly and deteriorated so severely that its windows and doors were eventually sealed shut. Following an $8.5 million restoration completed in 2005, the hotel reclaimed its place as downtown Chico’s crown jewel.
