History and Hauntings:

Opened in 1926 by the Benbow family, this Tudor-style inn was designed by architect Albert Farr as a luxury stop on the new Redwood Highway.

It quickly became a secluded retreat for Hollywood legends like Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. But its old-world charm, antique-filled rooms, and location deep in the redwoods seem to retain more than just history.

Staff and guests have collected decades of paranormal reports, which the hotel itself shares. The third-floor west wing is the center of the activity, with frequent sightings of a “Lady in White,” believed to be a 1930s housekeeper, often seen with a child near the kitchen stairs.

Other guests report sherry decanters popping their tops, a broken grandfather clock chiming, and electrical anomalies, which some attribute to the playful spirit of co-founder Burtis Benbow, a “mechanical genius” who perhaps never left.
