History and Hauntings:

Built in 1877 by Sam Hopkins for Hiram L. Leavitt, this Victorian inn served as a vital stagecoach stop for weary travelers journeying to and from the Bodie gold mining camps.

Leavitt, a New Hampshire native who settled in Indian Valley in 1865, brought his family and stage stop business to Bridgeport, eventually serving as Judge of Mono County until he died in 1901. Legend claims that Mark Twain himself stayed here, with Room 16 now bearing his name.

The inn’s most enduring legend centers on Sarah, known as the “White Lady,” a young woman who hanged herself in Room 19 after her fiancé was murdered shortly before their wedding.

Guests report encountering her apparition standing silently in rooms before vanishing, while housekeepers experience flickering lights in closed areas and hear voices from unoccupied rooms.

Visitors describe feeling an intense energy surrounding certain rooms, with some fleeing the building after unexplained encounters, while others report the air feeling “warped” when the White Lady is present.
