Opened in 1927, The Ahwahnee is a majestic National Historic Landmark designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood to offer luxurious accommodation amidst Yosemite’s natural grandeur.
Its unique “Parkitecture” style blends rustic stone and timber with Art Deco, Native American, and Middle Eastern motifs. A favored retreat for presidents and royalty, its history is deeply intertwined with the Curry family, pioneers of Yosemite hospitality.
Mary Curry Tressider, daughter of the founders, resided in a sixth-floor penthouse apartment until her death there in 1970. Her spirit is now said to be the hotel’s most prominent spectral resident, often seen or felt on the sixth floor, sometimes tidying rooms or rocking in a chair near her former apartment.
Guests and staff also report hearing unexplained footsteps, disembodied voices, and doors opening or closing unexpectedly, particularly on the upper floors near her old quarters.
