Haunted Hotels in Murphys

Haunted Hotels in Arcata

At the heart of Murphys, California, the Murphys Historic Hotel has stood since 1856, welcoming miners, travelers, and perhaps a few guests who never truly left. One of the oldest continuously operating hotels in the state, it has hosted famous figures like Mark Twain and Ulysses S. Grant and, according to legend, several lingering spirits.

Visitors often describe mysterious footsteps echoing down the hall, flickering lights, and the soft creak of doors opening on their own. Some believe former guests still wander the rooms, unwilling to part with the hotel’s warm glow and storied past. Surrounded by the charm of downtown Murphys, this historic inn offers a timeless stay where Gold Rush history and ghostly presence intertwine.

History and Hauntings:

Established in 1856 by James Sperry and John Perry during the California Gold Rush, the Murphys Hotel quickly became a prominent stop for travelers in the Mother Lode, hosting notables like Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant, and the infamous Black Bart.

Built substantially of stone to withstand fire, it has served guests continuously for over 165 years. Its long and storied past, deeply embedded in the rough-and-tumble Gold Rush era, fuels numerous tales of lingering spirits.

Guests and staff frequently report encounters, particularly on the second floor of the historic stone building. The spirit of a woman named Eleanor, possibly a former chambermaid or guest, is often mentioned, sometimes appearing in mirrors or felt as a presence.

The ghost of John Jacob Astor IV, though historically unlikely to have stayed there, is also sometimes cited in local lore. Disembodied footsteps, doors opening or closing, lights flickering, and furniture moving slightly are common reports.
