History and Hauntings:

Opened in 1913, La Jolla’s oldest original hotel, the Grande Colonial, quickly established itself as a sophisticated coastal retreat. 

Designed by noted architect Richard Requa, it expanded significantly in the 1920s and became a favored getaway for the Hollywood elite escaping Los Angeles. 

Its elegant facade and prime location on Prospect Street have made it a landmark for over a century, witnessing generations of guests. While not known for specific dramatic events, its long history has given rise to subtle tales of the unexplained. 

Staff and some guests occasionally report phenomena typical of historic buildings, lights flickering unexpectedly, faint whispers or muffled conversations heard from seemingly empty rooms, particularly in the original wings, or doors gently closing on their own, leaving a lingering sense of unseen company from eras past.
