Haunted Hotels in Ferndale

Haunted Hotels in Arcata

Tucked away near California’s rugged North Coast, Ferndale is a perfectly preserved Victorian village surrounded by misty redwood forests and coastal farmlands. Founded in the 1850s, this small Humboldt County town flourished as a dairy hub, its ornate storefronts and gingerbread-trimmed homes reflecting the prosperity of that era.

Today, walking through Main Street feels like stepping into the past, where every creaking porch and flickering streetlight carries echoes of another century. Beneath Ferndale’s postcard beauty lies an aura of mystery tales of restless spirits said to drift through the historic inns and century-old mansions that have witnessed both hardship and heartache. It’s this seamless blend of charm and the supernatural that makes Ferndale one of Northern California’s most hauntingly beautiful towns.

History and Hauntings:

This stunning example of Queen Anne and Eastlake architecture was built in 1895 for Dr. Hogan J. Ring.

Its intricate, multi-colored façade, often called the most photographed inn in Northern California, belies a much more complex history than just a family home.

For much of its life, the mansion served the Ferndale community in times of crisis and transition; it was the town’s first hospital, a rest home, and later an American Legion hall.

The building’s ornate parlors and 11 unique guest rooms have seen the full spectrum of human experience, from birth and recovery to final moments.

While traveler reviews focus on its modern luxury, local lore often speculates on its layered past, noting that a building that has served as a hospital for decades must surely retain echoes of its former patients and residents.
