Haunted Hotels in Arcata

In the heart of Georgetown, the Georgetown Inn blends timeless elegance with an unsettling mystery that has fascinated guests for decades. Built in the early 1900s, this stately red-brick hotel carries a lingering energy from its storied past. Visitors often speak of whispers in the hallways, phantom footsteps pacing above empty rooms, and the sudden chill that sweeps through the lobby after midnight.

Some have seen a woman in vintage attire drifting near the grand staircase, believed to be the spirit of a long-lost guest who never truly left. Mirrors flicker with faint reflections, and the scent of faded perfume occasionally hangs in the air. In Georgetown, history lives on, and at the Georgetown Inn, it sometimes refuses to rest.

History and Hauntings:

Originally built in 1853 as the American Hotel during the California Gold Rush, this charming Victorian inn served miners and travelers in the bustling town of Georgetown.

After a fire destroyed the original, it was rebuilt in the early 1900s and later meticulously restored. Its long history, intertwined with the fortunes and hardships of the Mother Lode, has given rise to persistent tales of spectral residents.

The most prominent spirit is believed to be “Oscar,” a lonely miner from the 19th century who allegedly waits eternally for his bride, who never arrived. His melancholy presence is often felt on the upper floors, particularly near Room 6 or the balcony overlooking the street.

Guests and staff also report encounters with a spectral woman in Victorian attire, possibly Oscar’s lost love, and hearing disembodied footsteps pacing the hallways or phantom whispers late at night.
